Design and Installation

Challenge:

Located in San Joaquin Valley, the University of California, Merced (UCM) opened in 2005 as the 10th campus in the University of California system. As the school of choice for approximately 2,700 students each year, all buildings on the campus are rated LEED silver or higher. With most of the buildings already constructed prior to the installation of the campus-wide AV system, there were several structural challenges.

Solution:

UCM's 35-classroom campus is outfitted with front projection rooms, 65" flat panel displays, ceiling speakers and IR assistive listening systems in the display rooms for local presentations. Mobile carts add to the ease-of-use and flexibility of design for UCM constructors, with comprehensive system resources that include document cameras, a DVD/VCR set, wireless microphones and laptop inputs.

Two AMX wireless touch panels are also included in each classroom. As part of the integration process, AMX technology is utilized through the use of one 10" permanently mounted on the wall and one 12" at the instructor's station. The modular design allows for "capture rooms" (display rooms with the addition of a camera for recording), with recordings to be accomplished via a video codec. Additionally, the modular design of the AV system includes videoconferencing rooms (display rooms with the addition of from one – four PTZ cameras and ceiling microphones). This set up enables one classroom to effectively connect with another, easily sharing video, audio and content.

In addition to the classrooms, comprehensive AV systems currently enhance UCM's six instructional labs and eight lecture halls. No matter their location in the auditorium, audience members have a great view. In order to maximize viewing capabilities for its audience, the main auditorium features two 12,000 lumens projector and one 16,000 lumens projector. Equipped with this advanced technology, viewers can take advantage of two side-by-side images, or one large one and a 14' x 25' screen. Campus-wide communications are facilitated through the use of a simple Starbak digital signage system, sending pertinent information to multiple single LCD displays throughout UCM over IP systems.
