Haworth Furniture

Mission: Abide by LEED Standards

Haworth Inc. is a global leader in the design and manufacturing of office furniture and organic workspaces, including raised access floors, moveable walls, systems furniture, seating, storage and wood case goods. When the leadership sought to renovate their headquarters in Holland, Mich., they turned to AVI-SPL for an innovative integration that would match their reputation for sustainable workplace solutions, as well as accommodate their LEED-certified status.

Action: Make It Simple to Use

“We have had clients so interested in the technology we’ve applied that they have benchmarked our best practices.” – Bob Dougherty, global IT manager, Haworth

The overarching approach from an AV perspective was to create a simple user interaction with components in the space, notes Bob Dougherty, global IT manager for Haworth. “We wanted to allow users to establish a confidence in AV technology without increasing internal support,” says Dougherty. “We also wanted to establish a global technology grid to create a common user interface and interaction with our spaces globally. Whether in Holland or Shanghai, the experience from a technology perspective would be the same.”

Not only does the 3-story structure of One Haworth Center stand as the company’s global headquarters, but the area also serves as a showroom for visitors and potential clients. Working with the IS/IT team, AVI-SPL collaborated on a design to integrate advanced AV technology with Haworth furniture products, including credenzas, tables and walls.

Impact: A Model of Inspiration

Haworth’s newly renovated 300,000-square-foot headquarters features AV enhancements in several small, medium and large-sized meeting and training rooms, and includes LifeSize video conferencing capabilities to easily connect with team members around the world. We added audiovisual solutions to the Sustainability Learning Center with an adjacent Constructability Lab, the Haworth Gallery, atrium audio system, client dining rooms, G.W. Haworth Auditorium, media wall kiosks and a member messaging system.

“We have had clients so interested in the technology we’ve applied that they have benchmarked our best practices,” says Dougherty. “We’ve lined up our technology experts to meet with some groups to fully explain our system to them. Our main presentation room features a retractable plasma display, which recesses into our Planes (Haworth product) credenza. This set-up always receives rave reviews.”
