Kight Center for Emerging Technologies

Challenge:

The Kight Center for Emerging Technologies serves as the hub for all communication within the network of Indian River Community College (IRCC) campuses. In addition, the school works with corporations and other educational institutions to share information and teach students about robotics, lasers and photonic technology. The challenge was monumental: to create an effective educational environment that would impact up to 250 students locally, and also produce a successfully strong means of communications for long-distance learners.

Solution:

Working together with the leadership of IRCC, our teams helped design three large venture auditoriums for distance learning and videoconferencing technologies. Both local students and distance learners could view multimedia content provided by the instructor on any of the three local screens. Overflow monitors were provided for students in the balconies so that they could see the same media rich content as those seated below in the main room. Faculty/student communications are also enhanced through the use of SMART interactive whiteboards. In order to deal with the height of the auditorium, our teams incorporated eight motorized microphones that automatically lower into position when the instructor initiates a videoconferencing session.

Equipment Highlights:

Control System: central processors; Wi-Fi wireless touch panel; video sync sensors; power controllers and communications modules

Display Systems: 3200 and 25000 lumen projectors; 16x9 HD projector; mirror systems; custom 16 x 9 rear projection screen; custom 24" x 13.5" screen; interactive whiteboard displays; plasma displays, and LCD displays
