Video walls are fantastic tools to set the mood of your environment, and attract, engage, and immerse your audience. But certain video walls are designed for different use cases.

If you are preparing to install a large digital display, make sure you take into account these video wall design considerations before designing the experience.

Your audience

Keep in mind that audiences in a corporate setting, on a college campus, or viewing mission-critical information in a government command center will interact with a video wall differently.

It is important to visualize how your video wall will impact your audience. Will the display:

  • Inspire team members with brand messaging?
  • Provide company or campus updates?
  • Be used to present content to others?
  • Feature interactive on-screen content for users to touch?

Your venue

Your venue is your theatre. And in a theatre, if the audience can’t see your show, it can hurt their experience.

Video walls are built to convey your message in the best quality and clarity possible. But they are not all built for the same environment.

Before making your digital signage purchase, you should consider everything from lighting (natural or artificial) to facility space, and video wall design, layout, and installation.

The placement of your video wall can determine how viewers see and engage with your content. Consider every viewing angle within your environment before you place your video wall to ensure everyone can see what’s on display.

And as you think about installation, consider how much of a physical impact your video wall will have on your space. Luckily, with the latest technology and wall mount capabilities, the space these solutions take up is minimal.

How to install Christie Core Series LED video walls

Video wall brightness and contrast

LCD and LED are two leading video wall display types. Both have value depending on your intended audience experience, your venue, and your budget.

Both display types feature excellent picture clarity. But that clarity can be limited depending on where your video wall is placed.

Ambient light is common in a meeting room or lobby. Despite your efforts to place your video wall in an area where glare is limited, lighting may still affect your display. To compensate, you will want to select a video wall that offers higher brightness levels and anti-glare options.

For darker environments, like an auditorium or a command center, you will want displays with a greater color palette and contrast to help ensure your display is vibrant and content is easy to distinguish.

LED video walls are the better option in either scenario. But LCD displays are not far behind.

Offering the best performance for brightness and consistency, LED tiles deliver 97% brightness uniformity. And with black printed circuit boards and black solder masks, LED walls can maximize contrast.

LCD panels are at an 85% to 90% uniformity level with improved black and low-level gray contrast.

But do these displays make it easy for you to share and display your content?

Your video wall design layout

Both walls are made up of multiple digital display panels positioned to feature one or multiple pieces of content. The difference in layout is that LCD panels have a small but noticeable bezel between display panels. LED display tiles, while more expensive, are designed for a seamless viewing experience with better pixel connection, and little to no visible tile bezel.  Consider the lifespan of LED also, which may compensate for a higher upfront cost.

In scenarios where your audience is just feet away from your video wall, the bezel of an LCD screen is highly noticeable.

If your goal is to entertain and engage your audience, that bezel could take away from an immersive experience.

But if your focus is on function and budget over aesthetics, an LCD video wall will display your content nicely.

Content image processing and management

Speaking of content, LCD and LED video walls offer flexible and efficient image processing built into their display panels. Connected via computer or a server, these displays will allow you to manage content directly on your screen.

Larger, more sophisticated video walls featuring content of different resolutions or formats may require adaptable content management or image processing solutions. We recommend using a solution with numerous features to ensure your content distribution and visuals are flawless.
