Today’s guest post is written by Bart Wood, Senior Director, Strategic Accounts, Q-SYS.
In a time where sustainability is a major focus for businesses and organizations, AV technology has quietly emerged as a force for change, paving the way for innovative strides in sustainability.
Imagine a conference room where AV technology not only provides seamless communication but also takes charge of energy conservation and automatically adjusts the power in all devices and lighting. Now imagine standardizing on that same room design and deploying them across businesses and organizations across the globe, reducing energy consumption on a massive scale.
Can Innovative AV Technology Lead to a Sustainable Future
Joe Pham, Chairman and CEO of QSC, believes in the immense potential of the AV industry to shape a better future. In his recent thought-leadership speech “Everything has Changed”, he says, “The opportunities for our industry are so immense and AV technology has such a meaningful role to play in the world that we live in today. As we contemplate the possibilities, we must ask a crucial question: Who will step up? Will we seize the moment right now, to create technologies and solutions that have the power to change the world?”
AV technology can help companies reduce their carbon footprints, use less energy, and adopt eco-friendly practices. By partnering with innovative organizations, collaborating with third-party manufacturers, and integrating with IT systems, AV Technology can align with company-wide sustainability initiatives.

Collaboration Amplifies the Effects of Innovation
At Q-SYS, we create AV technology that brings people together and promotes innovation between manufacturers. That is why we developed the Q-SYS Technology Partner Program, which fosters collaboration between Q-SYS and dozens of technology partners, resulting in end-users receiving the benefit of an ever-growing list of integration opportunities. Among our recent partnerships, there are three notable Q-SYS Control Plugins that specifically support sustainability:
1. Monitor What Counts
Atlona manufactures AV distribution, collaboration and control solutions, including an occupancy sensor that can automate system operations. With the Atlona plugin for Q-SYS, users can monitor occupancy, temperature, and ambient light, and integrate this data with Q-SYS and other devices. This allows for monitoring and control of the AV system based on occupancy and can power down less energy-efficient AV gear like the displays in the room. Similarly, the ambient light sensor can also reduce power consumption by dimming or turning off artificial lights when sufficient natural light is detected, saving energy and creating a more comfortable environment.
2. Control Your End Points
GUDE manufactures high-quality power and monitoring solutions. The GUDE Expert Power Controller plugin for Q-SYS enables users to discreetly control power outlets and monitor voltage, current, power, and other sensor data within the Q-SYS environment. These controls and statuses can be easily integrated into a Q-SYS UCI and automated using control pins.
You can use the GUDE Expert Power Controller plugin for Q-SYS to power down a non-networked piece of gear, based on scheduled events or triggers from other sensors in the room. For example, your system might have a set of legacy analog power amplifiers that you want to power down at the end of each day or after a room has been unused for a predetermined amount of time.
3. Schedule Your Lighting
The CueCore2 is a compact form-factor lighting controller for (semi) permanent installations and architectural lighting. It can play back lighting shows, static scenes, and dynamic effects using its two DMX-512 universes. The unit can be easily programmed to respond to different protocols or scheduled according to time or day.
Seizing the Moment
The AV industry has shown time and time again its ability to adapt and innovate, and the potential to shape a better future is within reach. Joe Pham’s question serves as a reminder for industry leaders and organizations to step up and seize the moment to create technologies and solutions that have the power to change the world. By aligning with company-wide sustainability initiatives and partnering with like-minded organizations, AV technology can play a significant role in reducing carbon footprints and promoting eco-friendly practices. It is up to us to embrace the possibilities and create a brighter, more sustainable future.
