Just as no two students are alike, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to outfitting classrooms and other learning spaces with audiovisual solutions. With hybrid learning becoming the new normal, cameras are an increasingly critical piece of education technology. That means knowing how to choose the right camera for your classroom space is critical, too.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing and integrating a camera in your collaboration space.

The Right Cameras Depend on Your Perspective

When choosing a professional-grade camera to streamline and enhance collaboration, the most important question to ask yourself is: what do you want students to see?

The camera field of view (FOV)—also known as the viewing angle—is what the camera can capture or see, and is measured in degrees. The wider the field of view, the shorter distance your camera is going to cover. The smaller the field of view the more clearly you can see things that are far away (think a telescope).

The use case for your camera, as well as the size of your room, where the teacher is and where the students will be sitting, will dictate the right FOV.

Several Factors Impact Getting the Right Shot of Your Collaboration Space

Once you’ve selected the right camera with the optimal field of view, you still have to position it correctly to get the right shot of your HyFlex classroom or other collaboration space. Here are three elements to keep in mind:

  • Camera height. To capture students seated in the classroom, the camera lens should be placed at seated eye level. To capture the teacher, which is especially important in hybrid learning environments, the lens should be mounted at standing eye height.
  • Camera angle. When it comes to determining the optimal camera angle, focus on who and what you want to capture. Then position the lens as level as possible to the eye height of who you are capturing. If eye height isn’t an option, it’s better to mount your camera higher than lower.
  • Room positioning. The camera lens is the eyes for remote classroom participants, so the best place to put a camera is in front of what you want students to see.
